New Bioterrorism Regulations Now in Effect for Food Industry in the US
After December, 2003, all of Oregon's 1,500 licensed food processors will be required to register with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and to give prior notice of imported food as part of the effort to safeguard the nation's food supply.
According to FDA public affairs specialist Alan Bennett, businesses that process, pack, or hold food for consumption in the U.S. have an option to register online, which should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. Registration information will not be made available to the public. All firms receiving imported food are required to notify FDA before its arrival at least two hours if it is being shipped by road, four hours by rail or air, and eight hours by water transportation. The prior notice will allow FDA to inspect product, if needed, before processing or sale.
Because of the importance of these regulations for national security, FDA presented a public videoconference Tuesday, October 28, 2003 about these regulations. FIC hosted the Oregon conference event in collaboration with the Northwest Food Processors Association. A streamed video archive of that presentation is available by clicking the link above, you will need Real One Player to display this streaming video event.
